Hartlepool United Ladies rounded-off their triumphant campaign in style on Sunday by defeating Chester-le-Street 5-2 at their Power Station ground.
The result means that Andy Stuart’s women end the season having won 14 out of 14, becoming the first team to win the league, cup and remain unbeaten during a full campaign.
Their prolonged FA Cup run earlier in the year meant that Pools were the last team to complete their league fixtures and, having wrapped up promotion a few weeks ago, they were in no mood to let their 100% record slip.
Pools raced in to a two-goal lead by half time thanks to strikes from Chris Corner on 15 minutes and Hannah Lambert on the half-hour mark.
The visitors took advantage of Pools taking their foot off the gas at the start of the second half to snatch a goal back and bring themselves back in to contention at 2-1.
However, Pools restored their two-goal cushion when substitute Hayley Henderson produced a well-placed finish from a corner just after the hour mark.
Within two minutes Chester-le-Street showed their spirit once again and seized on a lapse of concentration in the Pools defence to make it 3-2.
The game was up with fifteen minutes remaining though when Justine Robinson fired in to make it 4-2 before Katie Ord added further gloss with a fifth goal ten minutes from time.
“All the players in the squad have contributed this season,” explained boss Stuart afterwards.
“It’s a brilliant achievement to have won every league game and gone through a season unbeaten like that so now we have to keep up that momentum for next year.”
