We'll Keep On Getting Better - Hignett

1 March 2016

Craig Hignett is looking forward to seeing his side continue their improvement in performance when they make the long trip to face Bristol Rovers on Tuesday night.

The new boss has been pleased with the progress made by his new charges since taking the reins and, after a confidence-boosting draw against runaway leaders Northampton Town on Saturday, he wants another step up from the players this evening.

Darrell Clarke’s Rovers outfit have hit a tricky run of form recently, during which they have won just once in five games but Hignett has insisted that his sole focus is on how his own players perform.

“I’m not too bothered about what they do, I’m more interested in what we do,” he told Pools PlayerHD from the team’s hotel in Bristol on Tuesday morning.

“We played really well on Saturday after doing well at Luton – now we want to try and find that level of consistency because if we can put that together then we’ll win games.

“Great credit to the lads because they have shown a lot of faith and understanding in what we’re trying to do and I know we’ll only get better.

“Looking at training yesterday I feel like the lads are flying – even those who have been on the periphery of the team are really training well and that’s great for me to see.”

The Pools squad went for a short session in the hotel swimming pool after breakfast on Tuesday and will get plenty of rest this afternoon following a light lunch.

And while Hignett and his players make sure their preparations are perfect for tonight’s game at The Memorial Stadium, the Pools boss was sparing a thought for the fans embarking on an epic 550-mile round trip.

“Tuesday night down to Bristol isn’t the best of journeys so fair play to them.

“I understand there’s a lot of travelling coming up and it’s tough for them to get to all the away games but I’m sure the ones who make the journey tonight will get right behind the team.

“Hopefully we can give them a performance that they can go home happy with.”
