Ask A Silly Question: Jake Carroll

2 June 2016

The left-back takes his turn in the spotlight as we hurl a whole host of ridiculous questions at him so let's find out how he copes.

In this feature, Jake Carroll has picked 20 questions at random from our index of 100 - what can we discover about our Irish defender?

19 What’s the worst injury you’ve ever had?
I fractured a small bone in my groin when I was about 17. I was playing through injury at the time but I over-extended for a ball and heard something pop. It was really painful but it’s been the only really bad injury I have had so far.

90 Can you speak any other languages?
I can speak a small amount of Spanish because when I was at Huddersfield I became friends with a guy who only spoke Spanish. His name was Cristian and he’s playing in Romania now but we used to try and teach each other our languages!

3 If one of the squad was going to date your little sister, who would you want it to be?
I would probably pick Rhys Oates. He’s my housemate and I think he’s fairly harmless. Plus, if he did step out of line I know I would put in his place very quickly!

20 What’s your favourite aftershave?
Tom Ford. That’s the one I use on special occasions anyway. Day to day, I tend to wear Gucci but if I am trying to impress then I get the Tom Ford out!

25 How do you like your eggs?
I’m not fussy really, I enjoy them any way. Scrambled eggs, salmon and beans is my standard pre-match meal though.

35 Have you ever been mistaken for someone else?
Ha, that’s a good question. I usually get Lewis Hamilton or Chris Brown, amongst other good-looking celebrities! Actually, the biggest one I have been getting recently is Chris Smalling. I have had a few people come up to me and ask if I’m the guy who plays for Manchester United – I say no, though – I have never played along yet.

42 Do you like Marmite?
I don’t, no – I really, really don’t.

40 Are you a bad loser?
Yeah. I tend to kind of sulk if I am on the losing team. It’s mainly in training if I end up on the losing side at five-a-side, I am then in a bad mood for the rest of the day.

30 Do you know what your best friend’s mam is called?
Yeah, I do – it’s Paula. My friend is called Niall and he’s mate from back home that I have known from school so I know his mum well too.

85 Who was your football idol when you were a kid?
I loved Roy Keane and other Irish players like him at the time like Damien Duff. As I became more of a left-back, I started looking up to the likes of Ashley Cole though.

7 When did you last get angry?
I don’t tend to get angry that much, to be honest. The last time was probably when Kudus Oyenuga tried to claim that Danny Welbeck is better than Daniel Sturridge! I am not having that and, as a Liverpool fan, I was pretty offended!

43 Have you ever given blood?
No, I’ve never donated blood – I’m not good at all that. Any time I have a blood test if I see the blood they have taken I tend to get quite light-headed.

93 Would you rather see the future or change the past?
Change the past. I don’t really want to see the future because then there would be no excitement about the things that could happen. However, everyone makes mistakes you could go back and correct them.

77 Have you got any scars?
Yeah, I’ve got quite a bad one on my shoulder. I got that from falling out a shopping trolley when I was a child!! I grazed it quite badly and it scarred. Sometimes I tell people I got shot just to see their reaction!

71 Have you any hidden talents?
Ha! Someone asked me recently what I was bad at but I couldn’t think of anything. I am just good at everything. Cooking, speaking to women, arcade games – I am genuinely good at everything!

69 What’s your biggest fear?
Rats. My biggest and only fear is rats. I don’t even know where it comes from but I did see a dead rat when I was younger and I think that scared me. I reckon if I saw one right now you would hear me scream like a little girl!

67 What was the last book you read?
It’s called The Secret. It’s all about mindset and it’s a book that some of the most successful people in the world have lived by. It’s really interesting and I got recommended it by someone so enjoyed reading that.

79 Would you rather lose £1000 or lose all of your phone contacts?
All of my phone contacts, without doubt. I don’t mind being left alone and I’m not big on my phone anyway so I would definitely want to keep the £1000.

89 What was your first car?
It was a Ford Fiesta. My dad bought it for me when I was 17 as a present for passing my test. It was a great car, I loved it – I used to treat it like it was a Ferrari!

74 Do you have any brothers or sisters?
I have two sisters and one brother – Rebecca, Bianca and Jordan. Everyone in the family is football-mad apart from Bianca who is a nurse in Manchester. Rebecca plays football back home and has played at international level. Everyone is very sporty apart from the one outcast! Ha!
