It was a good workout for Craig Hignett's team in their final pre-season match before the 2016/17 season begins.
Scunthorpe United opened the scoring on nine minutes when a break down the left opened Pools up at the back and a great ball across the face of goal from Stephen Dawson was finished easily by Kevin van Veen from close range.
The goal, as early as it was, came against the run of the play so far as Pools had looked lively in possession and had seen much more of the ball, without really testing Luke Daniels in the visiting goal.
The next real threat in the box came again from the left for the visitors but this time Trevor Carson was able to collect as Conor Townsend sent a teaser into the box.
Pools did continue to look bright in possession, knocking the ball about with ease for spells but there remained little threat inside the box.
The first real half-chance arrived on 25 minutes when a decent cross in from Carl Magnay on the right picked out Nicky Deverdics but his glancing header just lacked the power to trouble Daniels.
Toto Nsiala got in a good block to deny van Veen a second goal after a Hakeeb Adelakun corner was blocked out only as far as the Iron striker.
The first half was a fairly even contest with Pools just failing to find something to really threaten an equaliser and it was Scunthorpe United who took the lead into the break.
Billy Paynter put a ball up for Padraig Amond early in the second half but the striker had the ball whipped away from his head by Townsend at full stretch.
Paynter went close himself to pulling his side level just after the hour mark when he latched onto a chipped ball to go in on goal but he was denied by Daniels who cleared the danger.
Pools were edging their way closer by the mid-way point of the second half as Michael Woods, Jake Carroll and Nathan Thomas all tried their luck with a hat-trick of chances, while Nathan Thomas sent another effort just after into the side netting.
Billy Paynter was denied by former Pools loan man David Mirfin who just beat him to the ball and sent it out for a corner kick as Hignett’s side began to show their teeth for a spell.
Lewis Alessandra had his chance on 79 minutes when he took the ball round the Iron keeper but with the angle tight, he sent his shot into the side netting.
Scunthorpe sub Duane Holmes looked to make an instant impact as he rushed in on goal but Carson held his final shot to keep it at 1-0.
