Pools Kick Off Pre-Season With Win

9 July 2016

Pools enjoyed a good run out in their first pre-season friendly of 2016/17, beating Billingham Town 4-0.

Two of Craig Hignett’s new signings got off the mark for the Club, with Lewis Alessandra and Padraig Amond getting their name on the scoresheet.

Last season’s top scorer Billy Paynter got another of the goals, while the fourth was an own goal from a Carl Magnay cross.

Hignett played two different teams in each half to give the bulk of his squad a run-out before they head off to Tenerife on Sunday.

Pools were on the attack from the off, with Rhys Oates the first to try his luck, but he sent a strike high and wide.

Lewis Alessandra was next up with an early effort, but his went wide, before Billy Paynter sent a strike from distance just wide of the post.

The strike pair combined on 18 minutes to give Pools a lead that had been coming; Paynter’s strike following a corner kick was spilled by the keeper and Alessandra stepped up to hit home the first of the game.

Just four minutes later and it was 2-0 as Paynter made it third time lucky as he rose to meet a Carl Magnay cross from the right to head home the second.

Magnay’s crosses caused problems for Billingham Town and when another came in from the right on 25 minutes, the home defender turned it into his own net to make it 3-0.

Lewis Hawkins went closest to a fourth before the break with a freekick from 18 yards but the keeper got enough on it and Pools’ first half eleven left the field 3-0 up.

Padraig Amond had the first real chance for Pools in the second half, rising to meet a Nicky Deverdics corner but his header went over the bar.

Amond did get the next goal for Pools on the hour mark, tapping in from close range to make it 4-0.

Pools remained well on top in terms of possession but chances came less frequently for a spell following the fourth.

Amond was once again the one to test the Billingham keeper late in the game with a strike from 20 yards but the stopper pulled off an acrobatic effort to keep it out and the game finished 4-0.
