Pools had to come from behind to draw at Seaham Red Star on Tuesday evening as Scott Harrison netted a leveller in the second half against the Northern League outfit.
Rhys Oates had the opportunity to give Pools the perfect start when they were awarded a penalty in the opening minutes but the front man fired his effort from twelve yards over the bar.
The hosts responded positively to the let-off and Adam Bartlett had to be alert to tip a free-kick over the bar before Kerr gave Red Star the lead just after the quarter-hour mark.
The set-back livened Pools up and Oates could have offered an almost instant response had his shot not come back off the inside of the post.
The home keeper Newbrook then took centre-stage as he pulled off series of fine saves, denying Josh Laurent and Brad Walker as the hosts took their lead in to the break.
Bartlett had to be on his game at the start of the second period to ensure that Red Star didn’t double their lead but the half was stop-start as the home side made a series of substitutions.
With little over fifteen minutes remaining Pools snatched an equaliser when Harrison lashed home from twenty yards to make it 1-1.
Newbrook then saved brilliantly from Nicky Deverdics to keep the game all-square and, although Pools finished on the front foot, they could not find a late winner.
"The performance was good, to be fair - it was about the ninety minutes and we got as much as we could out of it," explained Curtis Fleming afterwards.
"We worked very hard and if there is any criticism it's that we struggled a bit in terms of concentration and decision-making in the final third.
"They scored a wonder-goal really and then after that there were fans behind us wondering whether they had Joe Hart in goal - it was one of those nights.
"But overall it's about the fitness at this stage and we're really pleased with the work-rate the lads showed out there."
