Craig Hignett was pleased with the improvement he saw from his side as they drew 0-0 with Scottish League One outfit Livingston on Saturday afternoon.
Pools controlled large parts of the game at the Tony Macaroni Arena but could not find a breakthrough and had to be satisfied with a share of the spoils.
“I think we got plenty out of that – it was a really competitive game,” Hignett told Pools PlayerHD.
“We knew it would be because they’ve started their season and are probably about four or five weeks ahead of us in terms of fitness so it was a good gauge for us.
“It was a really good workout and overall I was pleased with what I saw because we moved the ball well at times, after the first twenty minutes where I thought we looked quite leggy.
“The disappointing thing was the bits in the final third because we got in to some great positions but picked out the wrong pass or were bit sloppy but we’ll sharpen up on that.”
The Pools boss also paid tribute to the travelling fans who made up 104 of the overall 313 crowd who watched the game and insisted his side would be firing on all cylinders in the coming weeks.
“It’s scary, I was gutted we didn’t get them some goals.
“I’m sure that what they’ve seen, they won’t go away too disappointed but we’ve still got work to do and when the season comes we’ll be ready.”
