Craig Hignett was happy with his side’s performance if not the result as Pools fell to a 1-0 defeat in their final pre-season friendly against Scunthorpe United on Saturday.
Kevin Van Veen’s ninth-minute goal was enough to earn The Iron a victory but Pools enjoyed plenty of possession and looked dangerous in the second half without quite finding a breakthrough.
And while Hignett was upset with the way his side conceded the only goal, he found plenty to be pleased with as the countdown continued to next weekend’s big kick-off.
“I thought we played some excellent stuff,” Hignett told Pools PlayerHD.
“Against an excellent side I thought we dominated the game – certainly in the second half we did when we created a lot of chances but just couldn’t put one away.
“I was really pleased with the performance and how they went about their business but disappointed with the result because the early goal was sloppy.
“I can play a number of ways – we can go 4-3-3, we can play a diamond, we can play 4-4-2 or even three at the back which we’ve had a little look at - we’ve got options and people on the bench who can come on and impact the game.
“Despite the result there were plenty of positives to take from the game so we’ll get back in training, have a really good week and build towards next Saturday now.”
