The Pools boss reviews Thursday's training sessions and tells us how pleased he's been with the time in Tenerife so far.
Hello and welcome to my latest diary entry from our training base here in Tenerife.
We had a tough day on Tuesday with playing the ninety-minute game and there are a few of the players just feeling a bit stiff after it. With that in mind it was important to make sure that we didn’t batter them with more high intensity stuff today.
It’s been really hot and their feet are not surprisingly on fire when they’ve been running around for ninety minutes. Of course, that’s on the back of three tough days on the bounce so they needed a little break and today gives them that, along with a chance to give their legs a rest.
We had a fun morning really, long warm-up and some core work to kick things off and then we did a possession game to get their legs moving and their minds going. We finished off with a Head Tennis competition which is always good for a laugh and gets the heart rate going at the same time.
The ‘Oldies’ team won the Head Tennis competition. I don’t know why but whatever you do, the Oldies always win it. They’ve got that bit of experience I think – and at the other end of the scale the young lads got battered every game!! Haha!
There was some good news this morning when Jake Orrell was able to join back in with training. He felt his thigh in one of the first sessions of the week so we needed to take him out of training but thankfully it wasn’t an injury to keep him out for two or three weeks so he was able to get back out there today. I’m sure it was frustrating for him to miss training but the fitness staff have kept him busy.
After training this morning we came back to the hotel and had some lunch and a little rest. Then this afternoon we will head back up to the training ground where we’re going to run through some ideas for set-pieces with the lads.
All the planning that goes in to the pre-season is being ticked-off now and Curtis and I are really happy with the way things are progressing so far. The time we’ve spent here have been hugely beneficial and we’ll have another productive day on Friday too.
I’ll be back to update you how that goes tomorrow afternoon!
