Pools Reserves were knocked out of the Durham Challenge Cup on Monday afternoon as Gateshead recorded a 1-0 win at Billingham Town.
It was harsh on the Pools side led by Ian McGuckin who had plenty of opportunities to have got on the scoresheet themselves but wasteful finishing cost them their place in Round Three.
Rakish Bingham flashed the first effort just wide inside the first ten minutes, while Adam Bartlett produced a good save to deny the visitors at the other end soon after.
Youngster Jordan Jewson was sent through on goal by Kudus Oyenuga only to be denied by the keeper and then send another shot just over after jinking inside from the left.
Bingham came close to opening the scoring just before the break when he found the time and space to curl a shot at goal but it just fell the wrong side of the post as the sides went in goalless.
A frantic opening to the second period saw Aaron Cunningham win the ball and then force his way through on goal only to strike a shot against the post.
Gateshead went straight down the other end and missed a glaring opportunity to score the first goal, before half time substitute Josh Hawkes set-up Oyenuga whose shot crashed against the bar.
The Tynesiders again responded in similar fashion when defender Jack Elliott came up from the back to get on the end of a delivery from the back but his effort came back off the post.
And with just five minutes remaining the decisive moment arrived when a free-kick was awarded and former Pools youngster Danny Johnson expertly curled it past Bartlett to make it 1-0.
