Reserves Beaten By Notts County

26 January 2016

A young Pools Reserve side were defeated 3-0 by Notts County in the Final Third Development League at Meadow Lane on Tuesday afternoon.

It was the hosts who started the game on the front foot and they were rewarded with an early lead when Rhys Sharpe burst down the left to cross and when James Dawson failed to collect, the ball was bundled in to his own net by trialist Julian Banton.

County took confidence from the early breakthrough and could have increased their advantage with chances falling to Genaro Snijders and Filip Valencic who both failed to convert.

However, on 18 minutes it was 2-0 to the home side as this time Fraser Briggs put the ball in to his own net following bright play by Montel Gibson down the flank.

Pools began to regain some composure as the first half wore on and could have reduced the deficit just before the break but Jack Blackford missed a good chance at the back post.

The visitors continued to look more solid at the start of the second half and enjoyed more possession but struggled to turn that in to clear cut opportunities.

With nine minutes left, The Magpies wrapped up the three points with a third goal; this time the lively Gibson found space to deliver a shot across Dawson and in to the far corner of the net.

“In the first twenty minutes we looked a little nervous and erratic which led to some mistakes,” admitted John Hewitson, who had led the team alongside Ian McGuckin.

“I think there is a chance some of the younger lads were over-awed by playing at a big stadium like Meadow Lane and against good opposition so it was a tough afternoon.

“We got better as the game wore on and at 2-0 we had a couple of decent chances to have got a goal back and that could have made it a different story.

“Overall, it was a hard work out for the team but we’re pleased about the way the lads kept going – it was just disappointing we conceded that third goal near the end.”
