Pools Youth Team’s winning run came to a disappointing end on Saturday as they were beaten at Grimsby Town.
John Hewitson’s youngsters were full of confidence going in to the game, having won three in a row but they didn’t reach the high standards set in recent performances and paid the price for it.
There was an end-to-end start to the game and Pools went in front with a clinical counter-attack on eight minutes; keeper Ryan Catterick showing quick thinking after saving a free-kick to send the ball long for Josh Hawkes who drove in to the area before finishing well in to the bottom corner.
Liam Travers could have made it 2-0 when he got on the end of Kenton Richardson’s cross but headed over, while Connor Simpson blazed a chance over after it was cut back to him by Travers.
However, on 20 minutes the scores were level as Pools switched off at the back and allowed the home forward through on goal; Catterick saved his first attempt but could do nothing to prevent the rebound being converted for 1-1.
There were good opportunities for Hawkes, Travers and Simpson after the break as Pools began to control the game but they couldn’t quite find the cutting edge that was required.
As long as it remained level there was always the fear that Grimsby could nick one on the break and that’s what happened with just three minutes left when a poor pass was seized upon and the forward went through to score the winner.
“We’ve performed much better in recent games but we just didn’t do enough of the things we’re good at today,” explained Hewitson afterwards.
“It was harsh that we got hit with the sucker-punch right at the end because, although we weren’t at our best, I still think we deserved something from the game.
“However, we didn’t really do enough to get the three points and our own mistakes made sure that we didn’t even come away with one in the end so it’s something we have to learn from.”
