Craig Hignett has told his players they must share his ambition to top the League Two table when they begin the new campaign against Colchester United on Saturday.
The Pools boss is aiming high ahead of the big kick-off at The Northern Gas and Power Stadium and has insisted that all the foundations have been laid for a successful 2016/17 season.
After overseeing an improved run of form towards the end of last term, Hignett is now determined to unlock a more consistent level of performance when the action returns this weekend.
“I think every football manager would want to win the league,” Hignett told Pools PlayerHD.
“I don’t see the point in standing here saying I would be happy finishing 10th because, for me, that’s not ambition.
“Ambition is wanting to be the best at what you do and that’s what I want the players to think and believe.
“I’m happy with the players I have; I can look at the bench now and see real options in how we play and we can cope with two or three injuries without losing quality which is what I wanted.
“The lads will certainly be aware of what they’re needed to do in their jobs and we’ll be very organised so I’m satisfied that we’ve done all we can to prepare.
“Colchester will give us a tough test; they’re a team who have come down and there has been a lot of change at the club – but I say all the time I’m more concerned with us and how we approach it.
“We’ve had a good pre-season and now it will be really nice to play in a game that means something so the lads are all raring to go.”
