The Pools boss was proud of his players after seeing them push Championship side Preston North End all the way in tonight’s EFL Cup First Round match.
With the game looking set to head into extra time, the hosts grabbed a 93rd-minute winner to send Hignett’s side out of the competition.
“It was cruel to say the least after the way the lads have played and defended all night,” Hignett told Pools PlayerHD after the game.
“We rode our luck at time but they are a Championship side and we’ve come here and defended like we have. In the second half I thought we played well and defensively I’ve got no complaints at all.
“I thought we were tremendous and it’s bitterly disappointing to lose it that way.
“No one wants extra time with the schedule we’ve got coming up but to come here and do what they’ve done, they deserved extra time.
“It’s disappointing but I’m really proud of the lads and their performance.”
