Pools Youth Team were made to pay for some individual errors as they were beaten 3-2 at Oldham Athletic on Saturday.
John Hewitson’s youngsters suffered a terrible start in the game and left themselves with a mountain to climb, falling three goals down within sixteen minutes.
Just prior to the half-hour mark, Pools did give themselves a foothold in the game when Josh Hawkes sent an inch-perfect ball in to the box for Liam Travers who headed his second of the season.
Pools drew confidence from pulling a goal back and created several good chances before the break; Jordan Fielding came close with a header and Lewis Orrell and Travers both had openings.
The pressure continued in to the second half when Fielding had another headed opportunity before Kenton Richardson struck the woodwork and Hawkes drew a good save from the keeper.
Midway through the second half Pools did pull another goal back to make it 3-2 when Richardson found the net after great build-up play involving Hawkes and Jack Cooper.
Richardson, Travers and Connor Simpson all had late opportunities to snatch a point but couldn’t find the net and Pools were left to rue their early carelessness.
“We paid the price for the first 16 minutes,” admitted Hewitson afterwards.
“The lads probably created enough to have not only got back in it but even go on and win but the individual mistakes in the first half left us with an uphill battle on our hands.”
