Ronnie Moore has called on his squad to rediscover their defensive resolve as they look to end a run of three league defeats with a trip to Exeter City this weekend.
However, Moore reckons his side have the potential to come away from St James’ Park with another positive result if they can return to the solid defending they showed in the opening weeks of the campaign.
“Exeter are a really good footballing side,” he told Pools PlayerHD prior to a training session at Exeter University on Friday afternoon.
“They might not have the physicality of some of the teams at this level but they pass it well and they move well, and they are attack-minded.
“Defensively we have to be stronger and sounder than we have been in the last few games and we have to stop giving away these silly goals.
“We’re not a million miles away – we’ve been close in all of our league games and even the ones we’ve lost we’ve had chances to win. It’s about keeping clean sheets.
“I think we know where they’re short and where we can use our pace to hurt them so we have to concentrate on what we do and let them worry about us really.”
Moore and his squad set off bright and early from Victoria Park on Friday morning for their base and stopped off for a short training session on familiar ground at Exeter University.
It’s the same training facility that the players have used in the past two seasons – and on both occasions they’ve gone on to take maximum points off The Grecians.
“We could have trained half way down, but when I heard that we were always coming here – I’m a bit superstitious!” the Pools boss laughed.
“All of the preparation is done so we’ll just do some crossing and finishing, and try and get any stiffness from a long journey out of their legs.”
