John Hewitson’s young Reserve Team side secured their place in the First Round proper of the Durham County Challenge Cup with a 4-2 victory over Darlington RA.The game didn’t get off to the best start for Pools as James Wilson put the hosts 1-0 up with a great free-kick which hit the top corner of the net inside the first ten minutes.
And the goal set up what was a quiet first half; there were chances for Dylan Elliott, Jordan Jewson and Ebby Nelson-Addy but none found the back of the net and Darlington RA took their lead into the break.
Pools came out brighter in the second half, with Jack Blackford testing the home defence with a great cross into the box within minutes of the restart.
Nelson-Addy hit the equaliser for his side with a cool kick from the penalty spot; after being brought down inside the area, the former Aston Villa man picked himself up to take the kick and he made it 1-1.
Pools were ahead shortly after when Fraser Briggs picked out in-form Dylan Elliott inside the box and he finished with his first of the game to make it 2-1.
Jordan Jewson hit the post with a decent effort after a great pass from Kieran Green before Darlington RA took advantage of a scramble in the box to snatch an equaliser.
Elliott was quick to fire his side back ahead though and did it in some style; the striker picked up a lovely ball from Green to smash a fierce strike into the top corner.
And Elliott rounded off the evening with his third of the game, latching on to another good pass from Blackford to run in and bag his hat-trick.
The win sees Pools progress into the next round of the local Cup competition.
