Pools Youth Team tasted league defeat for the first time this season as Lincoln City ran out 3-2 winners in a thrilling encounter on Saturday.
John Hewitson’s youngsters started the game on the front foot and perhaps should have gone in front early on but Jordan Jewson and Josh Hawkes both spurned good opportunities.
Jack Blackford stormed through on goal and looked set to put Pools ahead but appeared to be fouled by the defender in the area – only for the referee to wave away the appeals for a penalty.
And on 24 minutes Pools were behind when the defence didn’t deal with a ball in to the channel and the cross from the wing was powerfully headed home.
City doubled their lead not afterwards with a direct free-kick which crept in off the post but Pools pulled one back just before half time when Blackford’s brilliant cross was converted by Hawkes.
The next goal was always going to be important at that stage but Hawkes missed a glorious chance to level things up for Pools and they were made to pay when the home side made it 3-1.
Another Blackford cross set-up Dylan Elliott to score at the far post in the final seconds but there was no way back and Pools’ five-game unbeaten sequence was over.
“We had plenty of chances but some sloppy defending cost us,” admitted Hewitson.
“They didn’t have to work hard for a couple of their goals, they were certainly avoidable, and that what we will have to work on in training now.”
