It was a disappointing afternoon for John Hewitson’s Reserve Team at Billingham Town.
There was an early warning for Pools as Adam Wrightson cut in from the right only to see a shot saved well by Adam Bartlett.
Jack Blackford had a couple of early chances to give Pools the lead after that but it was Gateshead who opened the scoring just after the quarter-hour mark, with Mechak Kanda hitting home from close range.
And the visitors doubled their lead just before half time as Wrightson was again given too much space, running into the box to slot home into the left corner of the net.
Pools had a half-chance through Connor Smith who fired at goal but he saw his effort parried away by the keeper.
Dylan Elliott picked up the ball after a direct run from Smith who sent the ball across the face of goal for Elliott to poke home to make it 2-1 on 70 minutes.
Smith saw another effort saved just after before Gateshead restored their two-goal lead; Josh Ackroyd picking up a loose ball to curl the ball into the top corner.
Wrightson finished off the scoring just before full time as he fired in from outside of the box to make it 4-1 and round-off a disappointing afternoon for Pools.
