Michael Duckworth is celebrating after his wonder-strike at Carlisle United was voted as the Club’s Goal of the Season for 2014/15.
The full-back scored in spectacular fashion during the dramatic 3-3 draw against The Cumbrians on the final day of the season – and fans chose that goal as their favourite of the campaign.
Duckworth dropped a shoulder past two Carlisle midfielders, played a one-two with Marlon Harewood before smashing an unstoppable shot in to the top left-hand corner of the net.
It brought the scores back to 3-2 as Pools roared back from three goals down to take a point and send the 2,224 travelling fans wild with delight.
“As soon as I hit the ball I knew it had a chance,” Duckworth explained after we told him he was the winner of the 2014/15 Michael Maidens Goal of the Season award.
“There wasn’t a lot of competition for the Goal of the Season prize so it’s nice to win – but as a full-back I’m not sure I should be scoring goals like that so it’s great when they come along.
“It wasn’t until after the game and I watched the goal back again that I realised I had taken on two players first, exchanged passes with Maz and then let fly.
“I think it was down to technique really when it comes to the shot; I tried to keep my knee over the ball which is what you’re taught as a kid and it’s those of sorts of things that can pay off.
“It was a great atmosphere on the day; the fans were unbelievable and that made it even more special to score a goal like that – even if I did run off in the wrong direction to celebrate!”
Duckworth’s wonder-goal was a clear favourite with supporters in the vote, with Scott Harrison’s ferocious volley against Cambridge United in second place and Brad Walker’s top corner strike against Newport County in third.
