Ronnie Moore has completed his third signing of the summer with the arrival of highly-rated defender Carl Magnay from Grimsby Town.
The 26-year-old was one of The Mariners’ key players as they finished third in the Conference last season before being beaten on penalties by Bristol Rovers in the Play-Off Final.
Comfortable in either full-back position or in the centre of defence, Magnay picked up no fewer than six awards at the end of 2014/15, including Supporters’ Player of the Year.
Born in Gateshead, he spent two-and-a-half years with his hometown club before leaving to sign a one-year deal with Grimsby last summer.
After being released from Leeds United’s Academy, Magnay found an unconventional route back in to professional football when he earned a contract at Chelsea by winning the second series of Sky One show Football Icon in 2007.
Whilst on the books at Stamford Bridge he enjoyed loan spells with MK Dons and Northampton Town, also earning international recognition when playing for Northern Ireland Under-21s in 2009.
A serious knee injury brought to an end his five years at Chelsea but he made a swift recovery and a successful trial saw him pen a contract at Gateshead in January 2012.
His form for Town last season meant Magnay had no shortage of admirers this summer but Pools boss Moore made him one of his top targets and has convinced him his future lies at Victoria Park.
Subject to Football League approval, Magnay will join his new team-mates when they report for pre-season training at the end of the month.
