Ronnie Moore feels that the penny is starting to drop with his players after a confidence-boosting clean sheet in the 3-0 friendly win at Dunston UTS on Wednesday night.
The Pools boss had originally planned to send a young side to The UTS Stadium but had a change of heart in the wake of Saturday’s disappointing 5-3 defeat at Gateshead.
Frailties in defence caused a concern for Moore and his staff and they have been working hard to improve the squad's understanding of what is required when playing their 3-5-2 formation.
“I thought it was a good, competitive game against Dunston,” Moore told Pools PlayerHD.
“We haven’t been happy with the back three so we’ve been working on keeping clean sheets; I know we’re playing a non-league side but we’ve kept a clean sheet and limited them to very few chances.
“We have two exciting wing-backs who like to bomb on all the time but when we’re defending we need to drop in to a back four so it was all about walking through it in training really.
“But with all the training in the world it’s better playing in games so that was the reason we played them on Wednesday and I thought it was a great test which we came through with flying colours.
“Pre-season is about getting it right and if we get that back right then I don’t think we’re going to have too many problems going forward because we are creating chances.”
