Pools Youth Team made a solid start to the new campaign when they shared a goalless draw with Oldham Athletic at Blackhall on Saturday morning.
John Hewitson’s men set the tempo in the early stages and pushed their visitors on to the back foot by starting to create some decent scoring opportunities.
Jordan Jewson came closest to finding the net during Pools’ dominant opening but couldn’t quite convert after neat build-up play from Ethan Wood.
The Latics came back in to the game as it progressed and their physical size and direct approach caused problems for the Pools rearguard at times.
Liam Travers struck the bar with an audacious overhead kick after half time, while he also nodded a couple of efforts wide of target as Pools continued to look the more likely scorers.
Fraser Briggs and Jewson linked-up well to provide a scoring opportunity to Dylan Elliot but his shot hit the post, while Jack Blackford wasted a chance late on when he couldn’t punish the visitors fully after seizing on a sloppy pass.
“Overall it was a solid start to the season for us,” Hewitson commented afterwards.
“We’ve got to be happy with a clean sheet and some of our determined defending to protect it and I thought we looked a threat going forward.
“On another day I think we would have taken one of our chances but that will come with the more games we play so there were certainly some encouraging signs.”
