Number Crunching: Fleetwood Town v Pools

12 August 2015

We look back on some of the key facts and figures following Pools’ brilliant 1-0 win over Fleetwood Town at Highbury Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The loyal following of Pools fans who made the trip to Fleetwood Town on Tuesday night totalled 278. And they went home very happy after seeing another encouraging performance from the team.

Pools kept up their 100% record against Fleetwood Town in cup competitions, having also beaten them in the FA Cup in 2008. However, The Cod Army have a 100% record of their own in the two league meetings between the two sides.

This is just the 11th time in the Club’s history that we have opened a new campaign with back-to-back victories. The last occasion was back in 2008.

It’s the first time in five seasons that Pools have reached Round Two of the League Cup. The last occasion was in 2010/11 when we beat Sheffield United 2-0 before being knocked out at the hands of Wigan Athletic at the next stage.

It is only the third-time that we have started a new season with two wins and two clean sheets. The most recent occasion was way back at the start of the 1967/68 promotion campaign.

Billy Paynter is the first player since Paul Robinson in 2003 to score in his first two competitive matches for the Club. Indeed, you have to go back to 1989 and Ian Bennyworth to find a player who did so without the aid of a penalty.
