In our Summer NCS programme a second group of 38 young people attended Ford Castle Activity Centre near Berwick for 5 days and 4 nights.
Taking part in lots of fun activities including Jacob’s Ladder, Capture the Flag, assault course, archery, zip-wire, search and rescue, canoeing, fencing, disco, team games and mini Olympics, enabled the young people had the opportunity to test themselves with new and exciting challenges.
The activities encouraged the young people to work together as a team and push themselves out of their comfort zones by experiencing new challenges that will benefit them in the future.
The NCS programme is designed to encourage participants to increase their responsibility and independence by reflecting on both individual and team goals.
As part of the NCS programme the young people are required to carry out a social action project to benefit the local community. The group decided to renovate and regenerate two gardens, one at a local care home and one at Throston Youth Project.
In order to do this, the young people were required to raise some funds. They did this by holding a gig night, cake sale and sponsored walk.
This provided them with enough money to be able to repair and decorate tables and benches, buy and erect fences, design flowers beds and enhance the areas with outdoor lighting and accessories.
In doing this the young people have created areas that can be enjoyed by local people both young and old.
Again, another fantastic NCS project for the young people of Hartlepool.
