Pools Youth Team fell to a second successive Youth Alliance League defeat as they went down 4-2 at Lincoln City on Saturday afternoon.
John Hewitson’s men were made to pay for a sloppy start to the game and they fell behind early to a City side who got on the front foot in the early period.
And the hosts doubled their lead before the break when Pools failed to defend their area strongly enough and The Imps striker was able to finish well from ten yards.
The first half was not without opportunities for Pools though; Connor Smith crossed for Aaron Cunningham to score but it was ruled out, while Tom Mitchinson twice fired over the bar from close range.
Pools came out fired up at the start of the second half and were back in the game within a minute when Callam Wood took advantage of a defensive error to pull a goal back.
They continued to press looking for a leveller but were picked off on the break as City ran clear to make it 3-1 with a clinical counter-attack.
It proved a real setback for Pools who struggled to recover from the blow, and the hosts took full advantage of that by adding a fourth goal soon after.
On the hour mark Pools raised hopes of a comeback when Dylan Armstrong’s long-distance effort deflected in to the path of Connor Smith who slotted the ball home in to the bottom corner.
However, Lincoln defended well in the closing period of the game to deny Pools many more clear-cut opportunities and secure the three points.
“We got what we deserved sadly because the performance wasn’t good enough overall,” Hewitson admitted afterwards.
“There were times when we looked dangerous going forward and we did create some good chances but we always looked vulnerable at the back and that cost us.
“We need to work on our defensive play in the coming weeks because if we keep conceding goals at this rate we’re going to make it very hard to win games.”
