There were no goals to separate the teams in this afternoon's League Two match at Victoria Park.
After a frantic start to the game, there were early chances at both ends as the bustling Patrick Agyemang dragged a chance wide after 8 minutes when in a good position at one end, while at the other end Ryan Brobbel fired over and linking up well with Charlie Wyke.
On 13 minutes Portsmouth had another chance as Jed Wallace flashed a dangerous ball across the face of goal which just lacked that final touch.
Ryan Brobbel again followed that effort up with his own chance on goal, this time stabbing the ball wide after Wyke again fed the ball forward.
Craig Westcarr was next up for the visitors to try his luck on goal but once again the ball went over the bar but by now Portsmouth were on top and enjoying a good spell of pressure.
Pools were really penned back for a period and struggled to get out over the half-way line as Portsmouth pressed in numbers. And there were a few last-gasp blocks by Flinders, Harrison and Bates to keep the visitors out.
There was excitement for the home fans though as Michael Duckworth showed what he can do when he burst forward down the left, leaving three yellow shirts in his wake to power into the box and shoot at goal. His shot was blocked wide but the right back’s determined run gave Pools a lift.
Paul Robinson blocked a Brad Walker drive from the edge of the area after the Pools midfielder picked up a loose back to drive the ball at Paul Jones’ goal.
Pools were fortunate on the stroke of half time after failing to deal well with a Portsmouth set-piece but the ball was eventually cleared and the first half finished goalless.
There was a more scrappy start to the second half but this time it was Pools who were first to try their luck on goal; Ryan Brobbel went for the spectacular with a great volleyed effort from distance but, despite forcing the keeper out at full stretch, the ball went wide of target.
At the other end Scott Flinders pulled off a great save as he came out to close down on Westcarr and bravely blocked the striker’s shot.
Pools were looking quite solid at the back as they dealt with numerous attacks from the visiting forwards. However, there wasn’t enough at the other end to really threaten an opener with attacking moves breaking down in the final third.
A Brad Walker chip into the box as headed on by Wyke but he just sent the ball over the bar of Jones’ goal in Pools’ closest effort of this second half on 80 minutes.
Marlon Harewood, on the pitch in place of Jonathan Franks, pushed his way to the byline to turn and shoot from a tight angle but his effort went wide of the far post.
Jed Wallace, who was a threat for the visitors twisted his way into the box to shoot on goal but Flinders held comfortably as the minutes ticked away.
Pools had a couple of late chances to snatch a win but both Brobbel and Walker saw their efforts go over the bar and the game ended goalless.
