Pools Reserves were beaten 2-1 by Gateshead in their Final Third Development League fixture at The International Stadium on Monday afternoon.
It was revenge for Tynesiders after Pools had run out winners by the same scoreline when the sides met in the League Cup just two weeks ago.
Scott Fenwick was twice denied by the keeper in the opening stages before the hosts opened the scoring on the quarter-hour mark when Tom Heardman found the corner of the net with a curling effort.
Marlon Harewood spurned a half chance to pull Pools level, while there was some solid defending from Matthew Bates at the other end to prevent Lewis Guy from grabbing a second goal.
Jon Shaw nodded a header just wide after finding space in the penalty area, and Harewood stung the wall with a free-kick which deflected off target.
Fenwick had another chance to convert but his header was held by Wilson, and Gateshead doubled their lead moments later when Shaw made no mistake from close range.
Pools began the second half with more rhythm and Connor Smith almost pulled a goal back when he got on the end of Darren Holden’s cross following some good play down the left.
The pressure told moments later though when another good delivery – this time from the right and Jordan Richards – was headed home by Dan Jones.
Pools were right on top now and could even have levelled less than a minute later when Harewood won back possession and fired an effort on goal which was well saved by Wilson.
Fenwick twice though he had equalised only for the offside flag to deny the striker, who had scored twice against Gateshead in that League Cup fixture earlier in the month.
Harewood dragged an effort just wide of the target after good play from Lewis Hawkins and Smith , before substitute Callam Wood nodded a header wide from Smith’s deep free-kick.
However, Pools couldn’t find another route to goal and they were consigned to their fifth Final Third Development League defeat of the campaign.
