Firsts And Lasts: Sam Collins

16 May 2014

Sam Collins takes his place in the Firsts and Lasts hotseat as we find out more about the long-serving centre-back.

What was the name of your first pet?
Lady. It was a dog, a Springer Spaniel.

What was your first car?
It was a Nissan Micra, it was absolutely shocking. Every time it rained the windscreen wipers fell off so there were big scratches all over where the metal had caught the window!

What was your first holiday abroad?
Hmm, that’s a good one! I reckon it must have been Benidorm, that’s the first one I can really remember anyway.

What was the first gig you went to see?
I’ve only ever been to one! That was Pink a couple of summers ago.

What was the first match you went to see?
It was Manchester United v Coventry City at Old Trafford. I’m not certain on the year but Ron Atkinson was manager so I’m guessing it was 1983 sort of time. I think Man United won 1-0.

What was your first football shirt?
It was a Manchester United one from about the same time as my first game.

Who is the first person in your phonebook?
It’s Adrian Littlejohn – can you remember him? He used to play for Sheffield United.

When was the first time you realised you might make it as a pro footballer?
I think it was probably when I was about 15; I thought ‘I’m getting to grips with this football lark’ and thought I might have half a chance, especially when scouts and people were coming to watch me.

What was your first match as a pro?
I came on as a sub for Huddersfield at Colchester and played left-back. I came on in the next game at Tranmere and marked John Aldridge, then made my full debut the following Friday live on Sky up against Oldham and the beast that was Sean McCarthy!

What was your first mobile phone?
Ha, I had one of those big Nokia brick things – what was it, a 6210 or something? It was massive.

What was the last thing you bought?
I bought a coffee at the petrol station this morning - does that count?

What did you do for your last birthday?
I went for a nice meal in Leeds with my wife. It was funny because Neil Austin rang the restaurant and told them that it was my wife’s birthday so they came out with a cake and started singing at her. I didn’t know what was going on but then the lads rang me crying down the phone!

What was the last thing your took a photograph of?
Our Kit Man Marty got me some grass seed so I took a picture of my garden and sent it to him the other day.

What was the last thing you had to drink?
I had a bottle of water after my coffee or else my head would be rocking!

Who is the last person you spoke to on the phone?
My wife this morning.

What was the last match you went to where you weren’t playing?
It was the Champions League semi-final where Manchester United played Schalke back in 2011 – I think they’d already won well away in the first leg so coasted in to the Final in the end.

What is the last item of clothing you put on before a game?
It’s always my match shirt.

What is the last film you watched?
It was that Olympus Has Fallen with Gerard Butler in it. It’s about the CIA protecting the White House and it was very good, worth a watch.

Who is the last person to text you?
It was my mate Rich, who sent me a text earlier today.
