Stuart Parnaby has revealed that facilities at La Cala are among the best he’s ever experienced and he is determined to make the very most of the squad’s week in Spain.
The new signing has been delighted with the surroundings and schedule since the squad touched down in Southern Spain on Monday and he insists it’s a vital week in preparations for the new campaign.
Parnaby and his team mates have been put through their paces in the sunshine but the 31-year-old reckons the players are very lucky to be given access to such wonderful training facilities.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed the first couple of days,” he told us.
“It wasn’t too hard on the first day because of the travelling we did but were up early this morning for a 4k run which was a nice wake-up call – but when the weather is like this you don’t want to be lying in bed all day!
“The facilities are unbelievable so you can’t complain; I’d say throughout my career this is up there with the very best places I’ve been in pre-season so we have to use it as a base to show what we can do.
“We’ve got five-star facilities and we’ve got make the most of it; we couldn’t ask for a better pitch to do our ball and fitness work so we’ll have no excuses coming home.
“The atmosphere in the camp is good; we’ve got a very young group but for me, this week is as simple as getting to know everyone’s names so I don’t cock that up and getting a feel for everyone’s character.
“Then you can work out how much Mickey-taking and how many of my sarcastic comments I can get away with!”
Pools will return from Spain on Sunday and do some more work in training during the week before beginning a series of six pre-season friendlies to fully gear up for the new campaign.
Parnaby has been around long enough to know exactly how to make the most of the warm-up period and says that the work the players do will be totally focused on being at their peak for the opening League Two game at Stevenage.
“A week like this is can help for the whole season really – this is a base for us and by the time we go home we should have a good platform of fitness to build on all the way to August.
“Fans will always want to win pre-season games if possible but really it is all about having everyone in the best possible nick they can be for the first game of the season and the way it’s shaping up I’m sure we will be.”
