No New Year Cheer For Pools

Bury take the three points from the New Year’s Day Fixture at The Vic as Pools suffer disappointing 3-0 defeat.

Looking back at the stats from today’s match and in terms of possession, attacking play and corners Pools will come out well on top.

But it was Bury who took the advantage that counts, making the most of the counter attack and grabbing two early goals that left Cooper’s men with a mountain to climb and hitting a late third to put things well out of reach.

While it was Pools who started the brightest and looked to be dominating opening period, it was Bury who took the real advantage.

Cooper’s men burst into action and could have had the lead within the first two minutes; a Jonathan Franks corner found Brad Walker six yards out on goal and the young midfielder hit it sweetly at goal only to be denied on the line.

Pools continued to press but Bury made their first touches of the ball really count as they broke up field and when Daniel Nardiello fed it into Danny Mayor, the tricky midfielder saw his shot somehow evade Scott Flinders and hit the back of the net.

The goal didn’t seem to interrupt the flow for Pools who continued to pour forward in numbers.

But their positivity took another blow on 11 minutes when Bury broke once more with a great ball forward to Nardiello who saw Flinders come out off his line and calmly finished to make it 2-0.

Flinders made a decent save to prevent the visitors from putting it out of reach with a third as a Tommy Miller freekick hit target.

While Pools continued to do most of the work, their confidence did look shaken for a spell, particularly at the back where Bury were allowed too much space.

But as the half neared an end, Pools were back in full flow – with a couple of Jonathan Franks’ crosses from the right opening things up at the other end.

Jack Baldwin fired at goal from the penalty spot after getting on the end of a corner but was denied by a great block from Brian Jensen in the visiting goal.

James Poole saw his shot deflected high into the air only to dip on goal but again Jensen was able to block.

Early in the second half and Pools were back on the attack, with a Matty Dolan corner being flicked goalwards by Poole only again to be denied by a late block.

There was another shot for Poole as he squeezed between two defenders to send a ball just wide of the far post before Bury went very close to making it 3-0 as the busy Mayor sent an effort just inches wide of Flinders’ post.

It seemed set to be a day when things would just not fall for Pools; a Neil Austin cross somehow missed everyone waiting to strike and went out at the far post, while Franks sent an effort from close range wide of the near post as Pools continued to press.

But once again, Bury made it count when they found themselves in possession in the 75th minute when Richard Hinds got up to head home from a freekick to make it 3-0 and seal the points.

Colin Cooper made a triple substitution to try and give his side a lift and sub Sweeney went close to a consolation only to be denied by another impressive save from Jensen.

But there was not even a consolation for Pools who had seen much more of the ball this afternoon but failed to find target in a disappointing start to 2014 at The Vic.
