Youths Secure Third Straight Win

10 February 2014

Buoyant Pools Youth Team smash four past Grimsby to continue fine winning run.

Pools Youth Team recorded their third successive win with an emphatic 4-0 triumph over Grimsby Town at Blackhall on Saturday morning.

Confidence has been high in the camp since the turn of the year when extra work on the training ground has helped secure impressive victories over Chesterfield and Hull City.

And that run always looked likely to continue as Pools got to work against a direct Grimsby outfit on a heavy, rain-affected pitch at the weekend.

After dealing with what the visitors had to offer in the early stages, John Hewitson’s men began to assert themselves on the game and were rewarded with the opening goal when a great team move was finished off by Dan Turner.

Pools increased their lead before the break when Ben Wignall played the ball through to Connor Smith and the talented wide man wriggled through the Town defence to score a wonderful second goal.

Concentration remained high at the back for Pools in the second half as they were made to work hard to maintain their clean sheet by a determined Grimsby side.

However, Callam Wood made the points safe when he found enough space to spin quickly on the edge of the area and fire home a third Pools goal.

Rhys Harbottle could have made it 4-0 when he ran on to Dylan Armstrong’s ball cut back across the area but he wasted the opportunity by blazing his shot too high.

The fourth goal did arrive shortly afterwards though when Kieran Green’s incisive through ball freed Armstrong and he ran through on goal before producing a deft chipped finish to round-off the victory.

“It was a very hard-working performances, especially because the conditions were really testing,” explained Hewitson afterwards.

“We got another clean sheet which was pleasing and I was particularly happy for Under 16 defender Jack Turnbull who came in and did very well in the face of some testing opposition.

“The only negative was the loss of Jonny Wright who went off early on after going over on his ankle so we will have to see how bad that is during the next few days.

“The confidence is growing all the time now so we need to make sure we keep building upon that in the games we have coming up.”
