Pools Youth Team were in action on Saturday morning as they played host to Mansfield Town at Blackhall’s Welfare Park.
The game started brightly for John Hewitson’s side who looked organised and worked well to break up the opponent’s direct style of play.
Pools were strong in midfield with both Jordan Jewson and Tom Mitchinson looking lively.
It was Mansfield Town who took the lead though as they capitalised on hesitation at the back to pounce from a corner and take the lead, which they held until half time.
Pools came out on the front foot and looked determined to get back into the game, with Connor Smith creating some decent chances, while at the other end Jonathan Barber pulled off a great save to keep things within reach.
Dylan Armstrong drew Pools level from the penalty spot after he was tripped inside the area before Jewson put his side ahead after good work from Smith.
The official levelled things up in terms of penalties when he awarded a spot kick to Mansfield with just six minute left on the clock.
And, after making it 2-2 from the spot, Mansfield grabbed a late winner to take all three points.
"It was disappointing after getting ourselves back into the game and taking the lead that we let that slip so late in the game to lose out," Hewitson told hartlepoolunited.co.uk.
"We really should have had enough to hold on and win ourselves but it's another lesson for our young players."
