Colin Cooper has told his players he is looking for more quality on the ball when they make the Capital One Cup trip to Port Vale this evening (7.45pm kick-off).
The Pools boss has spent time reviewing footage from Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Stevenage and admitted that more composure and creativity is required when his team are in possession.
Now he’s looking forward to seeing them go up against a team from a higher division in what he expects to be an entertaining cup tie at Vale Park tonight.
“It’s a good challenge for us to play a team from the next league up,” Cooper commented.
“We played five teams from leagues above us last season and we equipped ourselves well on each occasion but we know this is a big challenge and an exciting cup tie.
“We’ve got lots to do to get better and I’ve just been listening to Port Vale boss Micky Adams saying pretty much the same things about them.
“All teams have now got one game under our belts and I think all managers – with the possible exception of Eddie Howe at Bournemouth – will feel there is work to be done.
“The trip to Forest last season was a difficult tie and this will be no different so we will need to be solid and competitive as we will in all away games.
“I’ve watched the Stevenage game back and I want us to be better when we get on the ball tonight than we were on Saturday.
“I know having watched them, seen reports and spoken to people that Port Vale will try to get the ball down and play so hopefully it will be an entertaining game tonight.”
