We preview Easter Monday’s Sky Bet League Two fixture against Morecambe at Victoria Park (3pm kick-off).
Hartlepool United v Morecambe
Sky Bet League Two
Monday 21st April 2014, 3pm
Morecambe are now enjoying their seventh season in the Football League having won promotion via the Conference play-offs back in 2006/07.
Since then they’ve remained competitive and even earned a place in the play-offs in 2009/10 when they finished fourth in their final season at Christie Park before the move to The Globe Arena.
They arrive at The Vic this Easter Monday just one point and one place above Pools in the table and amidst a run of eight games without a victory.
Indeed, after an eye-catching start, The Shrimps have endured a difficult second half to the campaign and have tasted the winning feeling just twice since the turn of the year.
Away from home they’ve not won since November but spirits will have been raised by Jack Sampson’s last-minute leveller which earned them a point against promotion-chasing Scunthorpe United on Good Friday.
When the sides met for the first time in the league at The Globe Arena earlier in the season Pools turned in one of their most powerful displays of the campaign.
Late, late drama ensured that Colin Cooper’s men returned to the north-east with three fully-deserved points which looked at one stage to have escaped them.
Jack Baldwin headed Pools in front when he met a near-post corner in the first half and it was an advantage the players should have built on as they produced some silky football.
However, Jack Sampson came off the bench to grab a leveller just three minutes left only for Jonathan Franks to volley home a sensational winner in injury time.
