Hartlepool United v Accrington Stanley
Sky Bet League Two
Saturday 14th September 2013
Pools play their third consecutive home game on Saturday when they welcome Accrington Stanley to The Vic.
After steering clear of relegation last season, Accrington turned to former England striker James Beattie as their new manager.
It’s been a tough start for the rookie boss who is yet to celebrate his first league win for The Reds, though they did claim a surprise Capital One Cup victory at Championship side Middlesbrough in August.
They arrive at Victoria Park on the back of six consecutive defeats, though they gained plaudits for their performance in the 1-0 reverse at league-leaders Chesterfield last weekend.
Beattie has boosted his squad with the arrival of powerful front man Kayode Odejayi on loan from Rotherham United which he’ll hope will ease the burden on a side who have failed to find the net in any of those six successive defeats.
Richard Barker was the match-winner when the two sides last collided as he made up for a first half missed penalty by scoring from the spot after the break at The Vic in April 2007.
It is perhaps the away game at Accrington that season in November 2006 which is remembered more distinctly by Pools supporters though.
An infamous half time team-talk from them boss Danny Wilson stirred Pools from one goal down to a dramatic 2-1 win thanks to goals from Eifion Williams and Ritchie Humphreys.
It would be almost five months until Pools tasted league defeat again following that season-defining victory.
Head To Head
Pools are waiting on the fitness of young midfielder Brad Walker who was forced off with an ankle injury in the early stage of last weekend’s game with Wycombe Wanderers.
