Pools' blistering start to their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy campaign has guaranteed an early-season addition to the trophy cabinet at Victoria Park.
Colin Cooper’s men claimed the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Team of the First Round Award after an inspired performance saw them storm to a 5-0 home triumph over Bradford City.
Pools had managed just one goal and no victories from the first six matches prior to the clash with Bradford, but it all came right on the night against the Bantams.
Despite playing in a division lower than their opponents and being up against last season’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Area Semi-Finalists, Pools surged into Round Two thanks to goals from Luke James, Jonathan Franks, Christian Burgess, Jack Compton and Nialle Rodney.
After being nominated for the award by the judging panel, the Club will receive a trophy and become the inaugural winners of an additional prize, £200 worth of Johnstone’s Paint product to use on a Club project.
Pools’ hierarchy have decided to use the prize to spruce up the main gates at their Victoria Park stadium.
“It was a terrific performance from the team and just what we needed to boost confidence,” said boss Cooper.
“We were fully aware of Bradford’s strengths and their reputation in knockout football.
“To get the win was really pleasing but to do so in such comprehensive fashion made for an excellent night for the whole Club.
“We are delighted to win the Team of the Round award and look forward to using the Johnstone’s Paint product on the main gates.”
Ben Wilde, Brand and Sponsorship Manager for Johnstone’s Paint, said:
“There were many eye-catching performances in the first round of this season’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy but the Hartlepool victory certainly stood out.
“To produce such a terrific performance and result after a tough start to the season was certainly worthy of the Team of the Round award.
“Congratulations to Hartlepool and we are delighted the Club is putting to good use the Johnstone’s Paint product element of the prize.”
Pools are now gearing up for a tough Second Round Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie away at Sheffield United on Tuesday 8th October.
