A rampant Pools Reserve side coasted to victory in the Central League by blasting nine unanswered goals past Rotherham United on Wednesday night.
Greg Rutherford grabbed a hat-trick as Sam Collins’ men ran riot at Billingham Town with the young visiting outfit simply unable to cope with a powerful attacking display.
The Millers were on the back foot from the off and were behind with less than two minutes on the clock when Lewis Hawkins’ deep cross was nodded down by Greg Rutherford right in to the path of Nialle Rodney to head home from close range.
Antony Sweeney drilled wide from close range after linking up well down the left flank with Darren Holden, but the midfielder was on target on nine minutes when he profited from positive play by Hawkins to tap in from six yards.
The game was only twelve minutes old when Pools made it 3-0; this time Rutherford added his name to the scoresheet when he found the net from close range with the visitors defence in disarray.
Hawkins’ long distance effort just didn’t dip enough as Pools continued to press and their pressure paid off with a fourth goal on twenty minutes when Jordan Richards delivered a corner low to the edge of the box where Brad Walker arrived to drill home through a crowded penalty area.
Holden drilled an effort inches wide of the target before the fifth goal arrived just after the half hour mark, Rutherford turning provider with a lovely slide-rule pass for Rodney who calmly stroked it past the keeper in to the bottom corner.
Millers keeper Charlie Bryan had had little chance with any of the goals but he had to be alert to make smart saves from Rutherford and Walker to prevent Pools from further extending their lead, while Zak Boagey clipped the bar right on the stroke of half time.
The punishment didn’t end at the break for the young Millers side who conceded a sixth four minutes after the restart when Richards drilled a ball low across the area to Sweeney who bundled in his second at the far post.
And Richards was the provider again when he cut the ball back to Rutherford to drill the ball in to the far corner of the net from the right corner of penalty area to make it 7-0.
Boagey then made it 8-0 with little more than 56 minutes on the clock when he sent a sumptuous looping volley over the helpless Bryan for the goal of the night.
The outstanding Richards could have added a ninth when he traded passes with Rutherford but the keeper spread himself to block the full-back’s effort.
Pools had to wait until twenty minutes from time when substitute Ben Wignall slipped the ball through for Rutherford who calmly stroked home to complete his hat-trick.
It could have been double figures when Richards again tore down the right hand side but his cross was miscued just wide by Rodney in the centre.
