Pools star Jack Baldwin is racing against time to play again this season after results from a scan showed medial ligament damage to his right knee.
The 19-year-old hobbled off with the problem after falling awkwardly during the first half of Pools' goalless draw with Colchester United at Victoria Park last Tuesday.
Baldwin will visit the consultant again today when it is expected to be confirmed that he will be missing for around five to six weeks.
"It's a blow for us and for Jack because of the form he had been in," admitted boss John Hughes.
"We're hoping that Jack is a quick healer and he can be back quicker than expected but we can't rush him so we'll make sure when he does return that he's 100% right.
"It gives the opportunity for others to come in and show what they do but it is disappointing for Jack given that he had enjoyed a good run in the side."
The teenager had been starring in a midfield role for Pools in recent weeks and had started in nine consecutive games before picking up the injury.
