Greatest Of Victoria Park: Fan's View

7 June 2013

We bring you the opinions of Pools fan Neil Robinson in response to our summer survey.

This summer we’re on the search for the greatest game, goal and player ever seen at Victoria Park and we’ve already had a brilliant response to our survey.

There is plenty of time to get involved but to get your memory going we’re going to share with you some of the thoughts of fans who have already had their say…

Name: Neil Robinson

What is the greatest game you’ve seen at Victoria Park?
Pools v Crystal Palace, 7th January 1978

Tell us your memories of the game you selected.
Bob Newton’s two goals – pure class!! Enough said.

What is the greatest goal you’ve seen at Victoria Park?
John Linacre against Aldershot on 4th October 1980.

Tell us your memories of the goal you selected?
John received the ball from Graham Richardson on his own eighteen-yard line, ran the full length of the pitch along the Clarence Road side, beating four or five players, then cut in about twenty-five yards from goal then hit a peach of a shot with the outside of his right boot past the keeper in to the top right hand corner of the net. The Shots keeper never moved!!! Stood in the Rink End and could not believe it. Made today’s so called Premier League efforts second rate!!

Who is the greatest Pools player you’ve seen at Victoria Park?
Bob Newton

What are your memories of the player you selected?
He was a big beast of a centre-forward and who can forget his two goals against Crystal Palace?! An all-time hero for me and how Pools could do with a player of his stature now!!!
