We preview our Sky Bet League Two game against Bury at Victoria Park on New Year’s Day (3pm kick-off).
Hartlepool United v Bury
Sky Bet League Two
Wednesday 1st January 2014, 3pm
Bury arrive at Victoria Park boosted by a 2-1 victory over fellow-strugglers York City on Sunday which saw them leap three places to 20th position in the League Two table.
It was their fifth league win of the campaign and provided a timely end of year boost for new boss David Flitcroft who was appointed to the hotseat at the start of December.
It’s been a tumultuous time for Shakers supporters, seeing their club come under new ownership since last term’s relegation and there followed a huge overhaul of the playing staff with over twenty new players arriving at Gigg Lane.
Early season struggle saw to the departure of Kevin Blackwell and the experienced Ronnie Jepson had been overseeing things up to the appointment of Flitcroft following his exit from Barnsley.
The new owners have big ambitions for Bury and want to drive the club forward quickly – but the first priority has to be to try and increase the two point gap which currently separates them from the relegation zone.
Last Meeting Prior to their win over York City on Sunday, Bury’s last victory had come at Pools’ expense when the sides clashed at Gigg Lane at the end of November.
On that night, it was former Pools loan man Daniel Nardiello who had the decisive say – his goal early in the second half proved the only one and clinched three points for the hosts.
It was a result that went against the grain in recent seasons though – Pools have beaten Bury in five of the last seven meetings between the teams.
Head To Head
Jack Compton looks likely to remain sidelined with the calf injury that kept him out on Sunday, but Andy Monkhouse returns to contention after a one-game ban.
