Michael Duckworth has admitted that he is loving life as a professional footballer but insisted that he won’t let the rave reviews he’s been getting for his performances go to his head.
The right-back arrived at the Club on trial from Bradford Park Avenue during pre-season and his eye-catching displays persuaded Colin Cooper to offer the 21-year-old his first pro deal.
Duckworth has quickly established himself as first choice in the full-back position where his determined defending and positive attacking play have made him a firm favourite on the terraces.
Released by York City at the end of a scholarship at Bootham Crescent, Duckworth says that he never gave up on his dream of returning to the professional game and is delighted with the way things are going so far at The Vic.
“I’m enjoying it every day,” Duckworth told Pools Player.
“It’s hard, both physically and mentally, but I feel like I’m coping with it well and I’ve fit in nicely at the Club so I’m happy.
“At the start of the season I would never have thought that I would have played as many games as I have so it’s great.
“Now I just have to keep my head, make sure my feet stay on the ground and continue to work as hard as I can.”
The bookies continue to look the other way when it comes to Duckworth’s goalscoring threat and the 25/1 shot came close to opening his account with a shot well saved in Saturday’s game against Portsmouth.
Duckworth scored three times for Park Avenue last term and he’s desperate to get off the mark at The Vic as soon as possible.
“Hopefully it’s coming sooner rather than later!” he laughed.
“I’ve got goals in the past but I wouldn’t say I’m a prolific scorer. I’d like to have a few by the end of the season though and I feel like it’s coming soon.
“I’m getting chances in games, I just need to keep my composure a bit more.”
