We preview Saturday’s Sky Bet League Two fixture against Torquay United at Plainmoor (3pm kick-off).
Torquay United v Hartlepool United
Sky Bet League Two
Saturday 31st August 2013
Pools make one of their longest journeys of the season this weekend when they take on the 750-mile round trip to face Torquay United at Plainmoor.
Torquay United survived relegation to the Conference by the skin of their teeth last season when they avoided the bottom four by only two points.
In the summer they officially installed Alan Knill as their new permanent boss after the departure of Martin Ling who spent the last four months of the season away from the role due to stress-related illness.
Having picked up only two points from their opening three fixtures, Gulls fans celebrated a confidence-boosting 2-1 win at Northampton Town last weekend to move them in to 13th spot in League Two.
The loss of top scorer Rene Howe who moved on to Burton Albion during the summer was a blow to Knill will be hopeful his young side can more than hold their own during the campaign.
Pools haven’t played Torquay since the last time they were in League Two back in the 2006/07 promotion campaign.
The last meeting came at Plainmoor in February 2007 when Eifion Williams scored seven minutes in to the game with a goal which was enough to secure all three points.
Earlier in the season the sides had shared the points at The Vic when Martin Phillips’ fifth-minute goal was cancelled out by Lee Bullock’s leveller nine minutes from time.
Pools have had a good run against Torquay in recent clashes – indeed they’ve won five out of their last seven meetings between the sides, drawing the other two.
Head To Head
Colin Cooper is expecting to be without skipper Antony Sweeney who is still receiving treatment for a calf injury.
Tickets are on sale on the turnstiles at Plainmoor with Pools fans given almost 500 tickets in a seated area of the stadium.
