We preview Saturday’s Sky Bet League Two fixture against Southend United at Victoria Park (3pm kick-off).
Hartlepool United v Southend United
Sky Bet League Two
Saturday 10th August 2013
The Shrimpers opened their League Two campaign in positive fashion last weekend when they overcame Plymouth Argyle 1-0 at Roots Hall.
It was a victory which will give the Essex outfit a real boost following a challenging summer, which has seen them under a transfer embargo from the Football League.
Phil Brown has had to deal with the loss of influential stars such as Ryan Cresswell and Gavin Tomlin but has been able to strengthen with the likes of John White and Will Atkinson.
Striker Barry Corr has signed a new two-year contract with the Club and if he and his team-mates can steer clear of injury then Southend could have a say at the top end of the League Two table.
Roy O’Donovan scored a hat-trick as Pools ran out comfortable 3-0 winners last time they entertained Southend United at Victoria Park back in March 2010.
It should probably have brought up a league double over The Shrimpers – but Pools had thrown away a two-goal lead at Roots Hall earlier in the season and ended up losing 3-2.
Interestingly, each of the last two seasons in which the clubs have shared a division have seen Pools win the home game 3-0 and lose the away games 3-2.
Head To Head
Colin Cooper is sweating on the fitness of goalkeeper Scott Flinders who was forced off with a muscle injury during the midweek defeat at Nottingham Forest.
Phil Brown is definitely without summer signing Julian Bennett after he ruptured his cruciate ligament in their 1-0 defeat at Yeovil Town on Tuesday.
Fans can buy tickets on the turnstiles or from the Club’s Ticket Office on Clarence Road.
