Narrow Defeat For Reserves In Cup

3 October 2012

Pools Reserves were beaten by Hull City in their first group game in the Central League Cup at Billingham Town this afternoon.

A solitary second half goal from the visitors was enough to give them the points on a largely frustrating afternoon for Micky Barron's men.

The game took some time to get going and the first half was low on chances, though it was the Tigers who found the greater threat in front of goal - Francis McCaffrey at the heart of most of their good attacking.

His run and cutback should have provided the opening goal for Jonathan Margetts but the Hull front man guided his shot just wide of the far post from just inside the box.

At the other end, Simon Walton curled a free-kick just over the bar and Greg Rutherford nodded a near post effort just wide after bright work from Luke James on the right.

The only goal arrived ten minutes after the break when a deflected shot wrong-footed Pools keeper Adam McHugh and when it came back off the inside of the right-hand post, Margetts was there to ram in the rebound from close range.

McCaffrey drew a strong save from McHugh with a firm drive as City searched for a killer second goal, while Mark Oxley had to be alert in the Hull goal to deny trialist Chris Winn's well-struck shot.

McHugh saved well again late on to keep Pools in it when he blocked Margett's front post header from a right-wing corner but there was no way back and it finished 1-0.
