Walton Can Be Our New Tinkler - Boss

8 July 2012

Neale Cooper has high hopes for latest arrival

Neale Cooper has compared new arrival Simon Walton to Mark Tinkler after the tough-tackling midfielder became the Pools boss' second signing of the summer this afternoon.

Tinkler was the mainstay of a midfield which helped Pools climb out of League Two in 2002/03 and mount successive play-off campaigns in League One during Cooper's first stint in the Victoria Park hotseat.

And after watching Walton confirm his move to the north east from Plymouth Argyle, Cooper is confident he has found the right man to help fuel the Pools engine room in the new term.

"He's a strong player, he likes a tackle but he's a good footballer too," Cooper told us.

"He was captaining Plymouth last season at just 24 years old and that tells you a lot about his character but his all-round game has impressed me so much.

"With losing Gary Liddle at the end of last season I felt it was an area we needed to strengthen and I'm so delighted to get Simon - he will fit straight in to the squad I am sure.

"As soon as I got the chance to meet him I liked him and when I saw him come through the door for the first time he just reminded me of Mark Tinkler, and he plays in a similar way too.

"I spoke to two or three managers about him and they all told me he would be a good addition for us - there were other clubs interested in him but we've remained patient and we're pleased he's signed.

"During the summer we have missed out on other targets - but if I'm being honest, I would rather have had Simon than any of those and when we heard there was a chance he would be available we jumped at the opportunity and got the deal pushed through."
