Boxing Day Defeat For Pools

There was no belated Christmas cheer for Pools this afternoon as John Hughes’ men made it 22 games without victory.

Former Poolie Matty Robson was the instigator as Carlisle United picked up a comfortable 3-0 victory at Brunton Park – leaving Pools at the foot of the League One table with just 9 points.

The game started relatively well from a Pools’ point of view as they saw plenty of the ball and kept Carlisle at arms’ length.

Steve Howard let rip with a snapshot from 40 yards in the second half, which was ambitious but did enough to warm up Mark Gillespie in the home goal.

Howard was involved again as he played a neat ball down to Jordan Richards who in turn sent a neat through ball on for Jonathan Franks. And the winger pushed on into the box to shoot on goal, only to see his effort clip the bar on its way over.

With the game opening up, Pools were enjoying plenty of possession, while having to deal with Matty Robson down the left was the main issue to deal with at the back.

The hosts had their first real chance on goal in the 17th minute when a freekick into the area was cleared only as far as Jon Paul McGovern on the edge of the area and his powerful effort back through the area was only collected by Scott Flinders at the second attempt.

Two minutes later and Robson set up the first goal of the afternoon for his side; the former Poolie unleashed a powerful strike from 30 yards which was heading wide until it took a big deflection off Pools’ defender Sam Collins and landed in the back of the net – the deflection having sent Flinders the opposition way.

The opening goal came out of the blue for Pools who had looked comfortable until that point but the second goal was not so unexpected.

A corner from the left sailed into the area where Flinders looked to be arriving to collect but when the big keeper spilled the ball, a real scramble ensued in the box. As Pools failed to clear, Lee Miller flicked the ball on and Robson was on hand to fire home from close range to make it 2-0.

In the remaining 20 minutes of the first half, Pools did see enough of the ball to hit back but a lack of a killer touch meant there was nothing to really test Gillespie.

Matty Robson remained a threat for the hosts and Jordan Richards was kept extremely busy in his right back role, dealing with the pace of the Carlisle winger.

After a quiet start to the second half, the hosts went on to enjoy a real spell of pressure, throwing everything forward and working Pools extremely hard at the back.

Scott Flinders made a good save to deny the hosts a third before Sam Collins cleared the danger, while at the other end, Andy Monkhouse had a chance for Pools but saw his strike through a crowd find Gillespie waiting to collect.

Hughes’ side went on to have their own spell of possession, doing enough to frustrate the home fans but not to break past Gillespie. There was good work from Richards and Howard and a chance for Sweeney but Carlisle were looking comfortable.

Danny Livesey sent a header just over the bar from a corner kick as the hosts remained the biggest threat in front of goal and just minutes later, they made it count as Robson created their third of the game.

Robson skipped past Richards down the left to send a lovely cross into the area which found Lee Miller and he had the simple task of nodding the ball over the line to make it 3-0.

And so it was another defeat for Pools who are still looking for just their second win of the 2012/13 campaign.
