Pools Reserves endured a terrible start to the season as they were beaten 4-0 by Chesterfield in the Central League at Billingham Town.

The visitors boasted the more experienced line-up but the performance was still a disappointing one from Pools, who were punished for some extremely sloppy defending.

Craig Westcarr and Jacob Hazel both started in lively fashion for the Spireites and saw efforts flash wide, while Scott Boden fired a shot straight at keeper Adam McHugh.

Darren Holden did well to clear his lines after a wicked delivery from the left from Hazel and Paul Johnson had to block on the line in the aftermath as Chesterfield pressed to go in front.

Trialist Femi Orenuga was Pools' only serious outlet in the first half but for all his twisting and turning he was struggling to find the killer ball, after getting to the byline he saw his cross-shot grabbed by keeper Richard O'Donnell.

Chesterfield's breakthrough came two minutes before the break when a ball was lofted up to the edge of the area for Boden who caught it on his chest, took a touch to find space and unleashed a wonderful curling effort in to the top right corner of the net.

Pools were caught on the break inside four minutes of the second half and when Mark Randall's pass was cut out by a retreating home defence, it fell back kindly to the midfielder who volleyed a sublime strike in to the top corner past substitute keeper Dominic Scott to make it 2-0.

Boden's header was well-saved by Scott after Jonathan Wafula's inch-perfect cross, while moments later Boden also fired an effort just wide as Chesterfield's dominance grew.

And just after the hour mark it was two when Hazel played a neat one-two with Boden and then directed a low volley past Scott, though the keeper will be disappointed that it wriggled under his body.

Hazel helped himself to his second and Chesterfield's fourth to round off the scoring when he got free at the far post to smash an unstoppable volley past Scott.

Orenuga came close to grabbing a consolation at the other end but was denied by O'Donnell who blocked bravely at the winger's feet.
