Skipper Sam reflects on a disappointing afternoon
Pools skipper Sam Collins stepped up to give his reaction after the side lost out 5-0 at Crewe Alexandra this weekend.
Collins and his teammates were clearly disappointed at their below-par display and the big defender was making no excuses,
“The main thing was that defensively, whether individually, as a back four or as a team, we were not good enough today.
“To be fair, some of the goals were down to individual mistakes and it has been a tough day for us.
“We had quite a few chances but if we are not solid at the back then it is immaterial. We have to keep a clean sheet and then hopefully one of those chances will go in.”
Pools now have a week to prepare for the start of the League One season, with Swindon Town coming to The Vic on Saturday.
And Collins insists the team will put in plenty of work on the training ground during the week to ensure this doesn’t happen again,
“We still have things we need to work on and hopefully this will give us all a kick up the backside, maybe we are not as good as we thought we were – not that we were getting carried away.
“We have got to be ready for the next game, we have to learn from what went wrong today and bounce back next week. That is a good game for us to start the league season on.
“It is hard for the gaffer after that but we know we just have to cut out the mistakes – one of their goals even came from one of our corners and there are lots of things we need to put right for next Saturday.
“We still have the makings of a good team here, we just have to get back to working on keeping clean sheets.”
Finally, Collins had a word of apology for the 188 supporters who travelled to Crewe to see Pools in action,
“They were brilliant today, I think they came here today expecting more as well. All we can do is apologise and put it right next week and that is what we have got to do.”
