One goal each as Pools host Hull City
Pools played out a 1-1 draw with Hull City in another good pre-season outing at The Vic this afternoon.
Jonathan Franks opened the scoring with his first goal for the Club, with the Championship side equalising through Cameron Stewart.
It was a fairly quiet first half here at The Vic, with neither goalkeeper seeing too much of the ball.
In a solid first forty-five, Sone Aluko hit the first effort of the game over the bar, while Steve Howard suffered the same fate with a headed effort from an Andy Monkhouse cross soon after.
Aluko and teammate Aaron Mclean both had half-chances for the visitors but neither hit target and Scott Flinders watched them wide.
There was a chance late in the half when a good cross from Jonathan Franks found Howard inside the area and then Monkhouse picked up to shoot at goal but Hull reacted well to block and then clear the effort.
Pools had a late freekick – the last action of the first half- and, although it was well worked with Horwood slipping it down the edge of the area for Sweeney who cut it back into the area only to see the ball blocked out at the near post for a corner kick.
The second half continued in much the same way, with both teams looking solid – though Pools probably edged it in terms of possession.
Just after the hour mark, Cooper’s men took the advantage; a lovely cross-field ball from Simon Walton started the move for the opening goal.
Walton’s pass found Horwood down the left, he fed it back for Monkhouse who lifted a neat ball into the area for Howard.
The big striker’s ball was blocked out to the edge of the area but only as far as Jonathan Franks who sent a rocket shot through the area, which deflected on its way past the keeper and into the net.
An Evan Horwood curling freekick went very close to doubling Pools’ lead but the visitors were next to find the back of the net.
A stinging shot from Jamie Devitt was blocked by Flinders but he was unable to recover quick enough to grab the rebound and Cameron Stewart pounced to smash home the equaliser from close range.
It was another good workout for Neale Cooper’s men as they prepare for the new season to kick off next Saturday at Crewe Alexandra in the First Round of the Capital One Cup.
